King James VI and the Union of the Crowns
King James ruled both Scotland and England, but each country retained its own parliament, church, laws and coinage. After 1603, he only returned to Scotland once, in 1617. He died on 27 March 1625 and was succeeded by his son Charles I. The following sources from the National Records of Scotland have been selected to illustrate key points in the reign of King James VI and I, and provide a flavour of the style and appearance of primary source material from the 16th and 17th centuries. |
